Chapter Eleven: No homo
The rain beating down on my skin was miserable and hurt worse than my damn razors. It was sharp, and cold, and for some messed up reason, I was barefoot. The asphalt was unforgiving and brutal, and I was running harder than I liked to, my chest hurting with how quickly I was breathing.
Loud, angry barking reached my ears and I shot a look over my shoulder at the big black dogs that were following me. Six sets of bloodied teeth and snapping jaws. I couldn’t stop, couldn’t slow down, they’d kill me for sure.
I twisted around the corner of a building too fast, my feet sliding through water and screaming at me in protest. I nearly fell over, but managed to catch myself. It slowed me down though, and I cursed as I kept going; the barking was only getting closer and closer.
A Jeep was in the parking lot. A blue one, a new model.
Scott.
With what felt like my last burst of energy, I pushed myself to run faster. The passenger door opened and I was so close. It was right there. I grabbed at it when I got close enough, my right foot hitting the slippery running board, ready to throw myself in. I was there. I was safe.
I looked up and froze so fast it felt like I was back in Juliet’s car when she’d slammed on the brakes. Everything inside my body hit a damned brick wall, I stopped breathing, my heart stopped. Because it wasn’t Scott behind the wheel; it was my father, with a charming, society-approved smile, relaxing like nothing in the world was wrong. My mother leaned forward from the backseat, permanent sneer on her face. “Junior, hurry the fuck up, you’re letting the rain in.”
The seconds ticked away in my mind, one after another with a distinguished tick, the ever-present barking in the background getting louder. I knew what would happen to me if I didn’t get in.
I knew what would happen to me if I did.
I stepped back and shut the door. The force vibrated through my bones — a death sentence, perfectly clear now. The rain let up.
The first bite ripped through the back of my leg, and I opened my mouth to scream.
“Lakyn! Lakyn wake up! It’s just a dream! Lakyn!”
I jerked harshly and blinked rapidly in Juliet’s face. She was white as a ghost, blonde hair a messy halo around her head. She had both hands on my shoulders, nails digging in painfully, and at some point, I’d ended up on the floor. Outside lightning struck, momentarily brightening the room.
My heart was beating a mile a minute and it was hard to breathe, but it got easier as her fingers lifted to my hair, pushing it off my forehead. She looked so much like her mother that I was comforted enough to manage drawing air back into my lungs. “What happened?”
“Nightmare,” she said. She brushed tears away from my cheeks I hadn’t even noticed were falling.
